Death of John Phillips

John Phillips, a former and well-known resident of Bernard, died in Chicago, Thursday, December 2, after a short illness, and the remains were brought to Bernard last Saturday and laid to rest in St. Patrick’s cemetery, Garry Owen.

Twenty years ago Mr. Phillips one of the foremost horse breeders in this section, and was the owner of "Europe," one of the most famous stallions and probably the finest Norman sire ever brought to America. He also owned Tolona and Young Europe. The Norman cut used for displaying horse bills in this office, is a portrait from life of the elder Europe, drawn by Lou Burke for Mr. Phillips. This famous and valuable horse died suddenly, and later other business reverses dissipated Mr. Phillips' fortunes and he was obliged to retire. For the past ten years he has been living in Chicago.

Mr. Phillips was about 63 years old. His wife died about six years ago and he is survived by the following children: Thomas, of Dubuque, Ben, of Nebraska, James, of Davenport, Joseph, of Waterloo, John of Castle Grove, Mrs. P. H. Evers, Mrs. Frank Brady and Mrs. Peter Kehoe, of Hopkinton; Mrs. David Donovan, of Bernard, and Mrs. Edward Williams of Kingman, Kansas.

Compliments of Joseph Cahill
