Earl J. McLees

The death of Earl J. McLees at the home of his mother, Mrs. John McLees, in Monticello, was a surprise and shock to his many friends in this locality. His illness was very short, the cause of death being acute dilation of the heart. His death occurred Sunday, February 25th.

Earl J. McLees, was a son of the late John and Mrs. Mary McLees of Monticello, and was born in Richland township, Jones county, Iowa, October 6, 1894. He was married to Anastasia Henneberry at St. Patrick’s church, Garryowen, September 22, 1916.

Earl McLees was one of the fine young men of this community. Of a cheerful disposition he met adversity with a smile and cheered others when they were prone to give up the struggle. He had a wide acquaintance among the farmers of Butterfield, Cascade and Garryowen. He and his wife lived for six years on the old John McLees homestead in Butterfield and from there in 1922, they removed to a farm in Garryowen, where a few years later, Mrs. McLees died, in May 1928. Soon after his wife’s death, Earl decided to quit farming and removed with his children to Monticello where he made his home with his mother and sister up to the time of his death.

He was a devout Catholic, a member of the Sacred Heart church, Monticello, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Many friends here deeply regret the passing of their friend and extend the warmest sympathy to Mrs. McLees and members of her family.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Catherine and Anastasia; his mother, Mrs. John McLees, brothers, George T. McLees, Cedar Rapids; John McLees, Cascade; and sisters, Mrs. F. J. McDonald, Kansas City, Kans.; Mrs. J. B. Waddick and Miss Pearl McLees, Monticello.

The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart church, Monticello. The officiating clergymen were Rev. Father Lorenz, Rev. Father Lavery, and Rev. Thos. Rooney of Cascade. Interment was made in St. Patrick’s cemetery, Garryowen.

The casketbearers were: John McCrea, Leo Noonan, Joe Green, Al Lane, Ray Bisenius, Lester Kivlihan, Clem Liddy and Clare Aitchison.

Compliments of Joseph Cahill
