BERNARD, Iowa - Virginia E. "Virgie" Ruden, 96, of Bernard, passed away at 3:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at St. Patrick's Church, Garryowen, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 1 p.m.

Virgie was born on July 15, 1916, in Dubuque, daughter of John B. and Elizabeth (Fischer) Gerdemann.

She married Urban P. "Urb" Ruden on Sept. 24, 1940, at Holy Family Church, New Melleray, and together they farmed in the Bernard area since 1945. He preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 2009. After Urb passed away, she moved and resided at Riverbend Retirement Community in Cascade.

Virgie had a great love for flowers and children.

Surviving are three children, Judy Schmit, Jim (Chris) Ruden, and Donna (Don) Haas; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, Steve (Lorri) Schmit, and their children, Jenica, Eric and Jill, Anne (Kyle) Kauder, and their children, Kayla and Vic, Mike (Cheri) Schmit, and their children, Drew and Jake, Janet (Kevin) Felton, and their children, Mae, Libby, Nicole and Kara, Karen (Matt) Rodekamp, and their children, Eden and Claire, Rod (Thea) Ruden, and their children, Gage, Ava, Tate, Maya, Ryan (Peggy) Ruden, and their daughter, Jillian, Emmett, and Sarah (Matt) Merz and their child, Sophie; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Gerdemann.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Don Schmit, on July 10, 2010; her brothers, Arthur, Clarence and John; and sisters, Marietta Cahill and Florence Steffen.

In lieu of flowers, a Virginia Ruden Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Riverbend Retirement Community, Shady Rest Care Center and Hospice of Dubuque. Also, thanks to Rita Fischer for being a good friend to Mom.
