BERNARD, Iowa - Donald J. Schmit, 67, of 996 Bernard Road, Bernard, died Saturday, July 10, 2010, of brain cancer at his home, surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Garryowen. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Garryowen, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

He was born on March 8, 1943, in Marion, son of Francis and Bernice (Osterhaus) Schmit. He received his education at St. Patrick's School in Garryowen.

He married Judy Ruden on Nov. 30, 1963, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Peosta.

He was a veteran, having served in the Army National Guard from 1961 to 1965.

Don was employed at the M & H Co., in Bernard, Cascade Implement and most recently at Cascade Lumber Co.

Don was an active community member, volunteering his time to many organizations. He was a member and president of the St. Patrick's, Garryowen Parish Council, president of the Bernard Commercial Club, grand knight of the Council 930 Knights of Columbus, member of the Bernard Fire Department, serving a term as chief as well as the president of both the Jackson and Dubuque County Volunteer Fire Department Associations.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Garryowen.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Schmit, of Bernard; five children, Steve (Lorri) Schmit, of Clinton, Anne (Kyle) Kauder, of Cascade, Mike (Cheri) Schmit, of Ames, Janet (Kevin) Felton, of Cascade, and Karen (Matt) Rodekamp, of Ankeny; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Pat Kramer, of Dubuque; his mother-in-law, Virginia Ruden, of Bernard; brother and sister-in-law, Jim (Chris) Ruden, and Donna (Donnie) Haas, both of Bernard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Urban Ruden; and a brother-in-law, William Kramer.

A Donald J. Schmit Memorial Fund has been established.
