The Dubuque Herald, Sept. 20, 1893
~
The death of James Hickson, one of the most prominent citizens of Jackson County, occurred at his home at Otter Creek Monday night. He suffered from a complication of diseases which had their origin in an attack of pleurisy last winter. Mr. Hickson was 70 years old, a native of County Kerry, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States about 1848 and about 1857 settled on the farm in Jackson County, living there the remainder of his life. He became one of the most successful and widely known farmers and stock raisers in the state. A man of the strictest integrity and probity, he won the friendship and esteem of all his neighbors and all with whom he had business transactions.

Mr. Hickson’s wife died last spring. He is survived by four sons and four daughters. The sons are T. F. Hickson, buyer for Wm. Ryan & Co., Dubuque, Christopher and James, who live on the homestead, and Michael of North Hawarden, Iowa. The daughters are Mrs. C. J. Donovan, Jennie, wife of Capt. James Daly of the Dubuque fire department and the youngest daughter living at home.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. to St. Lawrence Church and will no doubt bring out a great concourse for Mr. Hickson who was one of the most highly esteemed residents of Jackson County.
