Jacob H. Courtney, Center Junction, August 6, 1918

Jacob H. Courtney died at 9 o'clock, Tuesday evening and the funeral will be held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Friday at 1o'clock P.M., with burial in the North Madison Cemetery.

Mr. Courtney had a long illness covering an entire year, with the exception of four weeks when he was able to be up. During all that time he was affectionately cared for by his good wife.

He was born in Berkley Springs, West Virginia May 10, 1837. He came to Iowa at the age of 18 years and settled in Bellevue, in Jackson County. He was married in August 1862 to Mary Elisabeth Gardner of Bellevue. He was enlisted in and became a member of Co. K, 31st Iowa Infantry and served during the war of the rebellion. At the close of the war, about 1867, he came to Jones County and settled on a farm near Center Junction. After the loss of his first wife, who died in 1881, Mr. Courtney was married to his second wife, Mrs.Alice Riley (nee Hoffman) in September 1891 at Martinsburg, West Virginia, who survives.

Since 1896, Mr. Courtney has been a resident of Center Junction. His surviving children who are by his first wife, Mrs. Robert Moncrief, of Center Junction; James and Albert Courtney of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Mrs. Mert. Milner of Wyoming. They are all here for the funeral of their father.
