Oneta Faye (Ballew) Wherry, 94, formerly of Montclair, died peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 24, at Green Hill Nursing Home in West Orange.

Mrs. Wherry was born on June 7, 1921, in Norton, Texas, to Joe Clyde and Verdi (Ellis) Ballew.

After high school, she graduated from Gail Business College in Abilene, Texas, and worked as an executive secretary in Abilene while studying at Hardin Simmons University.

In 1943, she enlisted in the WAVES, part of the U.S. Navy, and served until the end of World War II, attaining the rank of yeoman 1st class.

While stationed in Seattle, she met John Decker "Jack" Wherry. They married on Nov. 1, 1947, in Abilene, Texas, and the couple returned to Maquoketa, Iowa.

For many years, Mrs. Wherry helped her husband manage the family hotel and restaurant business. She later worked as a travel agent.

Mrs. Wherry attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church for more than 60 years and served in the Women's Auxiliary and other posts and activities.

During her time in Montclair, she was a member of St. James Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Wherry was predeceased by her husband, Jack; her son, John Decker Wherry II; and her brother, Johnny Dale Ballew.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Robert) Meyer; grandsons, John (Siobhan) Meyer, and Matthew (Nyjah) Meyer; and two great-grandchildren, Kylie and Jackson.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Parish Hall of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. A funeral service will follow in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Mount Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa.
