John D. "Jack" Wherry, 78, died Monday at Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa.

Mr. Wherry operated Decker House Hotel for 30 years, a family business that his grandparents had built. He married Oneta Ballew in 1947 in Abilene, Texas. During World War II, he served in the Navy.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Maquoketa, and Maquoketa Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Robert) Meyer, Montclair, N.J.; and two grandsons.

Mr. Wherry was preceded in death by a son, John Wherry II, in 1974.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Carson & Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Maquoketa American Legion Post 75.
