Maquoketa Excelsior 2 August 1897

Mrs. Lewis M. Wood, a pioneer resident of this city and vicinity, died at her home just outside the city limits on the west, just a few minutes after midnight last Thursday. She was born in Warren county, N. Y., in December 1815, and was married to Mr. Wood in 1837. They have resided in this vicinity for nearly half a century and in the house in which she died for thirty-five years. She leaves her husband who is about a year younger than she was and three daughters, all of whom were at the funeral. They are Mrs. Sarah S. Nickerson of this city, Mrs. D. H. Eaton, who resides near town and Mrs. D. Wilcox of Sac City. One daughter, Mrs S. M. Poff, died several years ago. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. J. M. Dick of Iron Hill, were held at the residence on the lawn yesterday and the body was laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Wood has been a cripple from rhumatism. She was down town last about a year ago. Previous to that time she had not been away from the home for about fifteen years. In spite of her sufferings she was an amiable old lady. To everyone who knew her, she was grandma and she was a noble woman.
