PASSING OF PIONEER

Nicholas Remakel Goes To His Reward Saturday Morning. Funeral Monday

Nicholas Remakel, one of the pioneers of this county, died Saturday morning at his home in this city of complications incident of old age. Mr. Remakel was born near Luxembourg in 1837 and consequently was in his 74th year. He came to this country in his youth and located for a number of years at Port Washington, Wisconsin, and from there removed to this county, where he learned the shoemaker's trade, which he industriously pursued until about three years ago, where he was obliged to give up owing to ill health.

Mr. Remakel was living with his second wife at the time of his death, his first wife having died some years ago, and from this union five children survive: Mrs. E. L. Ward of Brodhead, Wisconsin, Mrs. Thomas Hayes of LaMotte, Mrs. Lena Veach, Brushbie, S. D., Mrs. Charles Baumhover, Dubuque and Michael of Bellevue. Mrs. Albert Keis of LaMotte is a daughter of his second union, who with her mother and several children of her former union survive.

The funeral was held at 9 o'clock from St. Joseph's church, conducted by Farther Vallaster. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery. Pall bearers were Matt Koppes, Mose Bean, Henry Ernst, Andrew Schmidt, Jos. Guenther and Ignatius Klein.
