Martha Exley (1841-1915)

Mrs. Martha Exley passed away Sunday morning at 11 o'clock at the home of her cousin, Mrs. W. H. Harrison. Mrs. Exley had been in ill health for more than three years, being afflicted with dropsy. Within the last few weeks she was stricken with paralysis, which has been pronounced as the cause of her death.

Martha Whitfield was born in Idle, Yorkshire, England, May 4, 1841. At the age of 17 years she was married to James Exley, who lived only a few years after their marriage. About 34 years ago, she came with her father, Joseph Whitfield, to this country and they located in Maquoketa, where they found employment in the Whitfield Woolen Mills.

Mrs. Exley is survived by one brother, William Whitfield of Livingston, Montana, besides numerous relatives and friends. The funeral will be held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
