MATTHIAS GOETZ, SR.

Matthias Goetz, Sr. died at his home in Washington township, Jackson county, last Thursday, January 4th, aged 72 years. He was born in Baden, Germany, December 27, 1826 and came to America in 1851. He settled in Tete Des Morts township where he engaged in the milling business. In 1873 he removed to Washington township where he followed the pursuit of farming. until the time of his death. For the past three years he has been ailing with heart trouble, but the immediate cause of his death was an attack of the grip. In 1857 he was married to Miss Christina Anna Rupp, whose demise occurred July 30, 1894. They were the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living, as follows: Fred Goetz of Bancroft, Iowa, John, Jacob, Fred, Mrs. Henry Keil, Mrs. Henry Reichwein, of Preston, Lottie and Tillie. Mr. Goetz was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and previous to his illness rarely failed to attend and support that place of worship. The funeral occurred Sunday, Rev. Lenz officiating, with interment in St. John's Lutheran cemetery.
