Henry Davis was born October 6, 1821, at Vernon, Oneida County, New York and moved with his parents when a boy to DuPage county, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Maria Odel in the early 1850's. This union was blessed with five children, all of whom preceed their parents to the grave. His wife, Maria Davis, died January 9, 1891. He was again married to Mrs. R. J. Atkins, February 25, 1894, with whom he lived until the time of his death, May 24, 1900.

Mr. Davis came to Jackson county in April of 1854, where he has since resided and prospered on a farm northwest of Maquoketa. He was laid to rest in the Bridgeport cemetery beside his children. Rev. F. F. Butler officiated at the funeral on May 26th.

Another old settler gone. Peace to his ashes.
