AMANDA SMITH

Mrs. J. C. Smith, who has been a patient sufferer for many months, passed away Sunday, shortly after noon. Amanda Fowler was born in Jackson County, Ohio, in 1843. In 1859 she was married at DeWitt, Iowa, to James C. Smith. Shortly after their marriage they came to Maquoketa and have since made their home here.

Mrs. Smith was a noble woman and commanded the greatest of respect from her friends. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs. Charles Patten of Pierre, South Dakota; Mrs. Lottie Hancock of Hettinger, North Dakota; Leslie Smith of Seattle; Gordon of Garretson, South Dakota; Bert of Wilmer, Minnesota; Ross of Jamestown, North Dakota; Mrs. Ethel Stearnes of Minneapolis; Elmer, Louis O., and Miss Etta of this city. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home on East Maple Street.
