Obituary

Mrs. Edward Flathers, mother of A. W. Flathers of Maquoketa, died at her home near Iron Hill, Jackson County, last Sunday evening, February 24, 1889, of general debility after an illness of several months. Mary Flathers was in her 75th year, She was born in Ohio and while quite young, moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, to Indiana, where she married Edward Flathers, who survives her. In 1842 they moved to Iowa, settling on a farm in Clinton County, about three miles south of this city. A few years later they moved to the farm near Iron Hill, where they have since resided. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Flathers, nine of whom lived to maturity. Three sons went to the war and one, Henry, lost his life there. One son, J. M. Flathers lives near Iron Hill, John lives in Kansas, Oliver in Omaha, Nebraska, William and Benjamin in Woodbury County and the only surviving daughter, Mrs. Fielden Bowling, lives in Chicago. Mrs. Flathers was one of the pioneers of this county and was well known and respected by a large circle of acquaintances. She united with the Baptist church when quite young and was true to that faith until the end. She was a loving mother and a kind and generous neighbor. The funeral services occurred from the Iron Hill church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Emory, of Iron Hill, officiating.
