MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Richard N. "Dick" Streff, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa, with the Rev. Msgr. Richard P. Funke officiating. Burial will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, with military honors accorded by the Timber City American Legion Post 75, O'Connor-Regenwether VFW Post 3633 of Maquoketa and Andrew AMVETS Post 62. Friends may call on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

Richard Norman Streff was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Maquoketa, to Henry N. and Agnes M. (Koppes) Streff. He married Elizabeth A. Bohling on May 25, 1948, in Maquoketa. He lived his entire life in Maquoketa. He graduated from Maquoketa High School and attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.

In his early years, he worked for Peterson Produce, Royal Bottling Works, Iowa Electric and Skrivseth Paint Store prior to being employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He was with the Postal Service from 1957 to 1985, retiring on disability.

Mr. Streff served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He served from 1944 to 1946 on a Sea Going Tug, the USS Takelma. He was discharged as a Quartermaster 3C.

He was an avid sportsman. He played for many years on local softball teams: the Maquoketa Bears semi-pro baseball team, the American Legion basketball team and various bowling teams. He was past president of the Maquoketa Bowling Association and the Maquoketa Country Club Board. He was a softball and baseball umpire for high schools of the area and was a Little League coach in the 60s.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa. He served on the parish council at the time of the construction of the new church. In his later years, he was an avid golfer. Richard enjoyed all sports and kept up with the latest sports via newspapers and television. He spent many hours reading and taking long walks.

He is survived by his wife, of 56 years, Betty; two sons, Stephen (and Deborah) Streff, of Marion, Iowa, and Mark Streff, of Maquoketa; three daughters, Pamela (Mrs. Gregory) Clements, of Fremont, Neb., Amy Streff, of Maquoketa, and Lora Reafsnider, of Clinton, Iowa; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter.

A memorial fund has been established.
