He was taken ill on board ship and on his arrival in France he was removed to Base Hospital No. 33 at Brest where he only survived five days and on September 30, at 4:30 p.m. he passed away. After he sailed his parents never received any word from him, until November 18 they received word of his death. Great anxiety was felt by the family the week proceeding the message of death as John was always a faithful correspondent. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Almo Gordon, his sister, Miss Helen, and Mrs. Chas. Hamel, of Cascade, and Mrs. C. O. Campbell of Moline, Ill., and also many relatives of Maquoketa.
