Rachel Wintersteen was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, May 10, 1823 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank March, near Andrew, Iowa, June 13, 1903, aged 80 years, one month and three days. In 1826 she came to Ohio with her parents where she was united in marriage to James Buchanan, July 11, 1844 and in 1850 they came to Iowa where they remained through life. To Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan eleven children- 5 boys and 6 girls-were born, 8 of which died in infancy, Mr. Buchanan preceded her, having departed this life Dec. 21, 1893. This leaving one son, Oscar of Kansas and two daughters, Mrs. C. W. Long of Missouri and Mrs. Frank March of Andrew, together with seven grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her death. Mrs. Buchanan was a worthy and consistent member of the M. E. church for many years. Funeral services were at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. Westfall with interment at the Andrew cemetery.
