HENRY BURKE

Henry Burke of Garry Owen died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Noonan, on Saturday, April 10th, 1892, at the advanced age of 93 years. Mr. Burke was born in the Townland of Lerhan, Parish of Clouberne, County of Galway, Ireland. He emigrated to the United Stated in 1831 and landed in Boston. He was married to Mary Powell, who survives him, in 1835 and moved to Dubuque in November 1836. In April, 1837 he moved to the farm in Garry Owen, now owned by his son, Joseph, where he lived until about six years ago. Since then he lived the greater part of the time with his daughter, Mrs. Patrick Noonan, whom he outlived by just eighteen hours, she died in the morning and he in the evening of the same day. He was the father of ten children, five of whom preceded him to the grave. His oldest daughter Ann was the first person to be interred in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Garry Owen. Those of his children who survive him are David of Bernard, John of Spokane Falls, Washington, Joseph of Garry Owen, Margaret, now Sister M. Dominica of the Sisters of Charity and James of Dubuque. He was ever a firm and constant member of the Catholic Church and died fortified by the sacraments of his church administered to him by his old and kind friend, Rev. Jas. Kelly of St. Patrick's church, Garry Owen. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was largely attended.
