Cascade Pioneer, Dec. 28, 1916
WORTHY WOMAN CALLED
Mrs. Mary Donovan passed away at her home in Cascade Sunday, December 24, after an illness of a few days. Mrs. Donovan's maiden name was Mary McCarthy and she was born in County Cork, Ireland, February 2, 1844. She came to the United States with her parents in 1854 when they settled in the Garry Owen parish in Jackson County, Iowa. On June 2, 1864 she was united in marriage to Patrick Donovan, one of the pioneer settlers of Butler Township. They lived upon the farm until the Spring of 1907 when they retired and moved to Cascade. On August 2, 1907, Mr. Donovan passed away.
Mrs. Donovan is survived by the following children: Mrs. P. C. Phillips of Dubuque, Frank Donovan of Toledo, Ohio, William Donovan of Coggon, Mrs. John Burke and Mrs. Joseph Burke, Jr., of Bernard, Michael and Miss Elizabeth of Cascade; four children preceded her in death.
Mrs. Donovan was one of those splendid, self-sacrificing women, whose life devotion was to minister to her beloved family, and in whose heart was implanted a deep and abiding reverence for her holy religion. She went to her final rest fulfilled by the sacrament and with implicit trust in a glorious resurrection.
The funeral services were held in St. Martin's Church Tuesday forenoon, Rev. L. Roche officiating. The remains were then conveyed to the cemetery at St. Patrick's Church, Garry Owen and laid beside those of her departed husband and children.
