Maquoketa Community Press, April 5, 1945

LeRoy C. Schroeder, Jackson County public official for the past twenty years, died in his home in Maquoketaat 5 p.m. Monday following an illness of five months duration. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Lutheran Church. Maquoketa business firms will close from 2 to 3 p.m.. The REv. Henry Mueller will officiate and burial will be made in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The body is at Carson and Balster funeral home where it will remain until time of services.

Mr. Schroeder has been Mayor of Maquoketa for the past seven years, but was not a candidate in the recent election. His final term expired at noon Monday. He was appointed mayor July 25, 1938 by the City council to fill a vacancy caused by the death of W. J. Pendray and had been re-elected to that position three times.

He began his career as a public official more than 20 years ago when he was appointed deputy clerk, during which time he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1931. He later served two terms as county attorney. At the time of his death he was assistant county attorney.

Mr. Schroeder was born July 1, 1901 in Clinton County, the son of Chris and Amina Kruse Schroeder. He grew to manhood in the Preston Community. On June 4, 1924, he was united in marriage to Miss Carol Doughty of Fayette. They have always lived in this community.

He was clerk of district court, Jackson county attorney, director and vice-president of the Recreation Park association and a member of the Jackson County Bar association, Commercial Club, Chamber of Commerce, Lutheran church, and Isaac Walton League. Surviving are his widow, four children, Asher, a prisoner of war in Germany, Murial, Karl and Carol Lee at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Schroeder of Preston, two brothers, Herman of Preston and Ralph of Maquoketa. His mother is a patient in the LeRoy Hospital suffering from a broken leg, the result of a recent fall. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Emil and Ed, and a sister, Alfreda. The sympathy of the entire community is extended the family in his untimely death.
