Wilton Man Is Stricken And Dies At Home. Special to the Democrat. - Wilton, Ia., May 15 - George Sherberger, 61, for 40 years a resident of Wilton, and well known thruout[sic] Scott county, died Sunday afternoon at 3:45 at his home in Wilton. Death was sudden and unexpected, altho[sic] Mr. Sherberger had been in failing health for about seven months. He had been feeling well during the early part of the afternoon, and had been sitting upon the porch reading a newspaper, when he had a sinking spell and died.
He was born on Oct. 7, 1860, and spent the early years of his life at Oskaloosa, later coming to Wilton, where he lived continuously with the exception of four years he spent in Muscatine as a deputy under Sheriff Frank Benham. For many years he held the offices of marshal and night watchman at Wilton, but since 1914 traveled for the J.R. Watkins company, Scott county comprising his territory.
His first wife died on May 5, 1908, and he married Mrs. Maud McCord [her name was actually Hebard] of Muscatine in March, 1910. Surviving besides his wife are four daughters and one son of his first wife: Mrs. Viola Stoll of Maquoketa, Mrs. Mamie Mowry of Muscatine, Mrs. Stella Schwin of Bear Springs, Mont., and Mrs. Vera Holzhauer of Muscatine, and the son, Fred Sherberger of Crown Point, Ind.; also eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mr. Sherberger was a member of the Modern Woodman of America, Knights of Pythias and the Pythian Sisters.
Announcement of the funeral arrangements is withheld awaiting word from the daughter in Bear Springs, Mont.
