Elizabeth Cole Dies
Maquoketa Record
Wednesday, October 18, 1899

The following obituary was taken from the Pawnee (Okla.) Times-Democrat: Miss Elizabeth Cole was born October 25, 1833, at Akron Ohio. In 1852 she married Lester Dean, who died in 1873. They came to Maquoketa, Iowa, in 1858. To them were born three daughters-Mettie, who died in infancy; Mrs. Hattie Dean-Griffin, who died in 1881, Mrs. Benj. Van Steinberg of Preston, Iowa, survives to mourn the loss of a loving mother. Mr. Dean united with the Baptist Church of Maquoketa in the early days and was an active member and Christian worker. In 1881 she married A.N. Smith of Maquoketa who survives her and whose children feel their loss as keenly as the one to whom she was parent in fact. And they are now the only mourners. Every person who knew her will miss her. To know her was to love her. Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Pawnee in 1895. She united with the Congregational Church and became an active member. Mrs. Smith died after a short illness of three days from paralysis of the brain and body. Mrs. Van Steinberg arrived only in time for the funeral. The services were held at the home Friday afternoon, Sept. 22, Rev. Stromire officiating, taking his text from Job 14:14: “If a man die shall he live again?” The music by the quartet was finely rendered. The remains were laid to rest in the Pawnee cemetery.
