INDIAN FIGHTER FROM COUNTY DIES MONDAY

Charles G. Jones, one of the nation’s three surviving veterans of the American Indian Wars, died in Cedar Rapids Monday, January 2. Mr. Jones, who would have been 94 on January 3rd, died after an illness of several months. He was born in Iron Hill, Jackson County, Iowa. He served three years in the Army during campaigns against the Apaches in Arizona and New Mexico. In later years he didn’t remember much action, but his horse named Sport, was recalled, as one would recall his dearest friend. Jones remembers Sport nuzzling against him, searching for sugar cavalrymen always carried in their pockets. Jones learned to like horses so much in the cavalry that he became a blacksmith when he was mustered out. He lived in Cedar Rapids when he retired in 1959. His death leaves two remaining veterans of the Indian Wars.
