William J. Orr Drowns

William J. Orr, son of John Orr, a farmer residing about three miles northeast of Maquoketa, had been a student at the Cedar Rapids Business College for the past year and had just begun actual duties of what promised to be a bright career when death overtook him as related below by the Cedar Rapids Republican:
A sad and unfortunate fatality occurred about 8 o’clock last evening. William J. Orr, bookkeeper and collector for the Electric Light and Power Co., was drowned in the Cedar River about a mile above the business part of the city. It was one of those unexpected fatalities which appear to be unavoidable. Mr. Orr was a young man, 26 years of age, of excellent character and business qualifications and great respect and esteem was entertained for him by all who had formed his acquaintance in this city. He is the son of a school teacher in Maquoketa and came to Cedar Rapids seven or eight months ago to take a course in the business college. This he completed about a month ago, when he accepted a position with the electric light company. Last evening he accompanied Prof. Maderaz and a dozen students of Prof. Palmer’s business college, up the river to bathe and swim.

The funeral occurred at the home in the country on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. and was attended by a large number of members of the Peerless Lodge No. 60, of which the deceased was a member. Rev. F. M. Archer officiated and the burial occurred at Andrew, followed by a large procession.
