Maquoketa Record
January 27, 1904Ralph Current, youngest son of William and Sarah Current, was born in Tangigagoa parish, Louisiana, on March 3, 1894, and died at the hospital in Maquoketa, Iowa, early in the morning of Jan. 21, 1904, after a week of intense suffering and a surgical operation performed to relieve a “strangulated hernia.” He was coasting near his home, and on the evening of Jan. 13 complained to his mother of a severe pain, which resulted as above stated. He was a patient sufferer and displayed a remarkable degree of fortitude for one of his age. Ralph was one of those peculiar and rare characters who made friends and won the love and admiration of all his acquaintances. He was the light and spirit of the home, and the sunny rays of his life will be missed by his associates. He was held in high esteem by his teacher and classmates, whose love and sympathy were extended to the family by their presence at the bier, covered with beautiful flowers from his friends, where their voices were lifted in song to speed the bright, sweet spirit of their fallen brother in his transition to a higher life. The passing away of this flower of youth was a sad occurrence, and vividly reminds us that death is a constant companion of life. The funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. J. F. Black, at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, Jan. 22, 1904, with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery.
