John T. Smith, 90, is dead; oldest Sabula resident.
John T. Smith, 90, well-known resident of Sabula for nearly 80 years, the eldest citizen of the community and father of Mrs. Charles W. Jennings, Maquoketa, died at 1:00 a.m., Monday in his home.
Last rites will be held at 2:30 p.m., this (Thursday) afternoon in the Sabula Methodist Church. The Rev. Forrest C. Clark, pastor and the Masonic Lodge will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born August 8, 1859, in St. James Deeping, Lincolnshire, England, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Smith. In 1860, the family moved to Lowden. At the age of 11 years, he came to the United States and thence to Sabula. When he was 16, Mr. Smith left home to see the world. He worked in Wyoming, Kansas and Colorado for three years before returning home.
In September, 1887, he was married to Lettie Scarborough. They farmed west of Sabula until moving to town in 1902. He was an active real estate man until shortly before his death. Mrs. Smith died in 1937.
In addition to Mrs. Jennings, he is survived by another daughter, Miss Bessie, at home; a son, Alfred of Chicago; two brothers, Charles of Lebanon, Missouri, and Will of Preston; four sisters, Mrs. Sadie Carter, Miles, Mrs. Lou McElroy, Clinton, Mrs. John McMahon, Charlotte and Mrs. Nellie Schnur, Sabula; and two grandsons. A son, James, two sisters and three grandchildren preceded him in death.
