Jackson Sentinel, July 4, 1885.

On Sunday morning last of disease of the heart, Wm. G. Moffatt, aged 67 years, 7 months.

The sudden and unexpected death of Mr. Moffatt occurred on Sunday morning last at 6 o’clock. It appears that Mrs. Moffatt had risen an hour previous and left him sleeping. Entering shortly after she still found him sleeping and not wishing to arouse him, but returned soon afterward and found him dead. A part of the family were sleeping in an adjoining room, but heard no struggle whatever on the part of the deceased, and it is supposed he passed quietly from a deep slumber to that sleep that knows no earthly waking.

W. G. Moffatt was born in Montreal, Canada, December 1817; came to Maquoketa in 1854 and followed the milling business in Pinhook Mills for many years, and up to about 1872, when he engaged in the grocery business on North Main street. Was married to his second wife in northern Illinois shortly before coming to Maquoketa. Has one daughter by his first wife, Mrs. T. N. Pray, of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, who was expected to be present at the funeral which occurred at the Congregational Church at 2 p. m., yesterday. Mr. Moffatt was highly respected by a large circle of friends. He was a man of good business qualifications and square and upright in all his dealings. A good man has crossed to the other shore.
