Death of Michael McCabe

Another heart rendering accident occurred near this city, on the McCabe farm, on Sunday last, which resulted in the instantaneous death of Michael McCabe, a boy about 15 years of age, son of the late James McCabe. It appears that the deceased, with a brother, who is a year or two older, and a number of other small boys, took a gun out into the yard to shoot at a mark, and while they were thus engaged, young Mike, as he was commonly called, spied a jay bird which had lit in a tree close by, and grabbing the gun started to shoot it. The bird, however, kept flitting from tree to tree in such a manner that the boy could not get a shot, and finally giving up the chase, he dropped the butt of the gun on the ground at his feet, holding the muzzle upwards in his hand. Just as the stock touched the ground the gun went off, the charge entering the face just below the left cheek bone and passing upward through the brain lodged against the skull at the top of the head, killing the unfortunate lad instantly.
