Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, June 7, 1883.
Sad and Fatal Accident.
Tuesday forenoon, R. F. Jenkins, who lives near the Reform Church, some five miles west of the city, in accompany with his tenant, Mr. Hall, delivered a load of hogs to this city. Just before noon they started for home, riding on top of the hog rack. When about a mile on the road, at the foot of the hill west of Fred Henry’s place, they were obliged to pass under a maple tree, the limbs of which protruded far out over the road. In order to make the passage safely they were compelled to lean sideways from their seats. Mr. Jenkins leaning to the left and Mr. Hall to the right. Whether he was brushed off or not is not known, Mr. Jenkins lost his equilibrium and fell to the smooth, hard roadbed, striking on his head, causing concussion of the spine, from the effects of which he died in 10 minutes.
Ransler F. Jenkins was born in Warren County, New York; was 75 years old the 16th of last January, and in company with his brother, J. H. Jenkins, came to Iowa in the Spring of 1856, settling at his present home. He leaves a wife, children and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn his untimely and sudden demise. Mrs. David Wright of this city is his daughter. At this writing she is in Illinois, but a telegram has been sent calling her home. The remains will be interred at the Union Church Cemetery south of the city today.
