Preston Independent, April 4, 1891, reprinted in the Jackson Sentinel, April 9, 1891.

A week ago Wednesday, March 26th, John Hahs was found dead in his house on the J. Dyer Smith farm, about two miles from Preston. Mr. Hahs had just recently moved into the house and had fitted it up for his wife and four children whom he expected from Germany. He was found by Mr. Ehrensberger, who had called to deliver some seeds which he had ordered. The surroundings went to show that the unfortunate man had been taken sick; there was a poultice on his chest and he was only partially dressed. He had evidently fallen from a chair on which he had been sitting as the chair was partially over him when found. Coroner C. W. Miller was notified but deemed no inquest necessary, after an examination, as his money was found on his person. Deceased had two sons living near this city and his remains were interred in the Preston Cemetery on Friday last. At this writing his family have not yet arrived from the old country.
