Jackson Sentinel, December 1, 1881.

DIED

MAUDSLEY- In this city at 2 a. m., Tuesday, November 29, 1881, of asthma, Mr. Sutliff(Sutcliffe) Maudsley, aged 72 years, 6 months and 19 days.

Deceased was born in Whitehouse, Acrington, Lancashire, England, May 10, 1809, and accompanied by a young wife and family came to Nauvoo, Illinois, U. S., in 1842. In the disturbance of 1846 they were driven from Nauvoo, and took up their residence in Milwaukee the same year, and after five years removed to Maquoketa, Iowa where deceased has lived for the past 30 years, where he is known as an honorable, industrious citizen, doing what his hands and health would permit him to do. For years past he was unable to leave the house. He was afflicted with the asthma full 50 years, and has suffered, no one realizes how much unless it be his devoted wife who still lives through all the trials and hardships of a long life. Mr. Maudsley had 13 children, 7 of whom are living. Five-Joseph, William, C. W., Mariner and Mrs. Nettie Culverwell, were present at the funeral, which took place on Thursday. The last moments of the deceased were excruciatingly painful, and during the last month of his illness he would sleep for several days and nights in succession when the pains would leave him.
“After life’s fitful fever he sleeps well.”
