Jackson Sentinel, March 7, 1878.

DIED-

SACKRIDER- February 18, 1878, at his residence, five and a half miles south of Maquoketa, Mr. Isaac Sackrider, aged 80 years.

Mr. Isaac Sackrider was born in Putnam County, New York, in 1798. His father died when he was quite young, leaving himself and an older brother with a large family to care of. He lived with his mother until he was married, which was in the year 1825 when he commenced the world for himself. Twelve years after, he made up his mind he would move west, where his father-in-law lived, it being in Delaware County, Ohio. In September, 1837, he disposed of what few things he had, bid farewell to his native home, and started for the wild scenes of the west. On his arrival he purchased a farm in the wilderness and built a log cabin, which was a custom among the early settlers, and cutting and falling of trees, which were in abundance. In 1842 he joined the M. E. Church.

In 1842 his wife died leaving him with a family of seven children. Two years after he lost one of his children and his own health became poor. He again sold his farm to try the west and procure more land. In the spring of 1851, he and one of his sons started for Iowa on foot. They were fifteen days on the road. When they crossed the Mississippi River they stopped at Maquoketa, where he had an acquaintance living, and to rest a few days, and still go further on; but the country suited him so well he purchased a farm five and one-half miles south, then owned by a Mr. Richardson, then started home down the Mississippi by way of St. Louis. As soon as he reached home he made arrangements for the removal of his family to his recently purchased farm near Maquoketa, where he resided until his death. He visited his old home twice to see his mother, who lived to be 102 years old. He has one brother living in Ohio, and one sister and two brothers in Putnam County, New York, one of whom visited him and left for home one week before he was taken sick. In the commencement of his sickness Dr. Truax was summoned Sunday afternoon, remaining until the next day, but could give no relief. Dr. Flanders took his place the next day. Drs. Murray and Truax came, but they found there was no help for him. On Thursday Dr. Bowen, he also decided that there was no help for his case, there could only be temporary relief of his suffering by tapping him. The next day the two latter daughters were summoned and relieved him by the same process. From that time he laid in an unconscious state until Monday morning the 18th, at half past one o’clock when he passed away. The funeral services took place on Tuesday the 19th at 11 o’clock, at the Union Church, with a large congregation. The funeral service was preached by the Rev. Mr. Lusk of Delmar.
