May 18, 1918Former Resident Dead.
Many of our older residents will remember Otis Crawford, cousin of the late Mrs. Pierce Mitchell of this city and the time of the Civil war and who lived with the Mitchell family up to the time of his enlistment on August 6, 1861.
He enlisted in Maquoketa when 19 years of age and was a member of Co. A. 9th Iowa Vol. Inf. He was mustered into service on Sept. 24, and was promoted to 6th Corporal the following March. In August 1862 he was promoted to Corporal of color guard.
He was wounded in both shoulders on May 23, 1863, in Grant’s second assault on Vicksburg, Miss. Later he was given the rank of 2nd Corporal and served faithfully until the expiration of the war, being honorably discharged at Davenport, on December 24, 1864.
Mr. Crawford was a minister and had occupied the pulpit in this city at various times although he never held a pastorate here. Several years ago he delivered a memorial address here.
He passed away at his home in Kansas City on April 22, 1918. Surviving are his wife and daughter.
