August 1, 1907Died.
McCOMB. – Mrs. A. S. McComb died Thursday morning, July 18, 1907. She had been a sufferer from a complication of troubles for sometime, and death was not entirely unexpected. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church Friday afternoon, the Methodist church being closed for repairs. The services were conducted by Rev. M. G. Rambo assisted by Rev. H. O. Bethel, and largely attended. The great crowd of people at the funeral was an eloquent testimony to the esteem in which the departed was held by her neighbors.
Gertrude Kitts was born in Jennings county, Indiana, April 19, 1867. In 1877 she came with her parents to Butler county, Iowa. Later they went to Jackson county, where she spent the years of her girlhood. March 15, 1889, she was united in marriage to Andrew Smith McComb, and since that time resided in their home northeast of Grand Junction. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband and eight children, besides a stepdaughter, Mrs. Harry Cunningham; also a mother, seven sisters and three brothers. She was the oldest in the family, and the first one to pass the river of death.
She united with the Presbyterian church when fourteen years of age, and remained a faithful member of the same until her marriage. Upon coming to Grand Junction with her husband she united with the church to which he belonged, the Methodist Episcopal. During all her residence here she was one of the most faithful exemplary members of the church, and her place in the congregation and in various lines of church work will be greatly missed.
She was a loving wife, a careful mother and a good neighbor. She had been in poor health for several years, the last five weeks of her life being helpless. But she patiently and in a spirit of Christian resignation bore her affliction, looking to the call of the Savior to take her to the home which is free from all suffering and pain.
The following from out of town attended the funeral: Mrs. Viola Elrick, Misses Daisy, Grace, and Nellie Kitts, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Kitts, of Jackson county, brother and sisters of the deceased; Miss Ida Hammond, Belle Plaine; Mrs. M. M. Jenkins, Mr. and Mrs. Harry McComb, DeSota; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones and Mrs. Henry Wise, Paton; David Van Pelt and family, Bernice and Albert Van Pelt, Ogden; and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Farley from north of Beaver. – Grand Junction Globe.
