His Battle is Won

Pvt. Menzo Widel was born near Maquoketa, Iowa, May 20, 1893, and killed in action in France Sept. 17, 1918. He was the youngest of four children, one sister, Iven of near Maquoketa, one brother, Dana of Lost Nation, and another brother, Lyle, with the A. E. F. now somewhere in France.

Menzo was a loving brother, kind and good hearted, always glad to share anything he had, very industrious, eager to do anything that came before him, and everything he did he did well. Very energetic, stalwart, and loyal to his country.

Menzo made a great sacrifice when he entered his country’s service, leaving everything, very dear relatives and numerous friends. He went to Camp Dodge April 30, 1918 and was assigned to Co. I, 358th Infantry. From there he went to Camp Travis, Texas, then to Camp Mills, L. I., and from there he sailed for France in June, where he fought bravely for his country and our freedom, and there made his supreme sacrifice.
