Alphonso Ast Suffers an Attack of Heart Failure and Drops Dead While at Work

About seven o’clock Monday evening of this week Alphonso Ast. A well known farmer living four miles northeast of this city was found dead in his orchard on his farm, not a great ways from the house.

At noon Mr. Ast decided that there were several trees in his orchard that needed trimming, so he told his wife that he would be out there during the afternoon and he took his axe and departed. Nothing strange was thought of him not coming home before early supper time, but later Mrs. Ast became uneasy and asked some of the neighbors to assist her in making a search for him. After being out a short while his body was found in the orchard cold in death, where it had lain for perhaps three or four hours, as its condition indicated. The coroner’s inquest resulted in a verdict of death from heart trouble.

Mr. Ast was a healthy looking man and had been feeling in his usual good health. In fact it is said that he had never been sick in his life, and of course such an ending as this had never been thought of by him or his friends. Thus is one in the prime of life taken from us when least expected.

Alphonso Ast was born in Alsace, France, on July 29, 1864.

In the year 1872, he left his native land and came with his parents to this country. They located in Jackson county, soon after coming to America and this county has been the home of Mr. Ast since that time.

On February 26, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Gommert, and they located on a farm four and one-half miles northeast of this city, where they farmed successfully for many years.

Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Kate, at home, one brother, Joe Ast, of Davenport, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ast of Portland, Oregon.

Funeral services were held yesterday morning at the Sacred Heart church, Rev. Father Craney officiating. Interment was made in the Bridgeport cemetery.
