ANDREW
After months of patient suffering, a beautiful Christian life is brought to close. Elizabeth Jane Adair was born in Decater County, Nov. 18, 1859, bereft of her father at an early age, she with her sister and one brother, William, was brought to the orphan's home in this city, where under the guiding hand of the instructors of the home she was one of the many from that home that grew to be a gracious and accomplished young woman. She received religious instructions in the Lutheran faith, and practised her religion faithfully all her life. Jan. 25, 1878, she was married to Peter Hankemeier. Imagine if you can the happiness of this young bride to now be mistress of the pretty home her husband had for her on his farm 4 miles north of Andrew, and where Mr. and Mrs. Hankemeier shared each other's joy and sorrow, watched their interesting family of four girls and three boys grow to be accomplished young men and women, all of whom were with their mother during her last illness.

In the 1901 Mr. Hankemeier was called to his eternal home. Mrs. Hankemeier remained on the farm with her sons until 1908, when she purchased a home here and enjoyed the comforts of a well-spent life until about a year ago, she was compelled to move to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chris Beck, where every effort of kind nursing and medical skill could not prolong her life. Medical advice and hospital treatment was sought, in the hope a cure might be found, but the heavenly Father knew best, and early New Year morning He bade her come into her heavenly home and enjoy forever more the merits of her earthly work. Mrs. Hankemeier was a true Christian mother, a devoted wife, a kind and sympathetic friend and neighbor, whose death is universally mourned by young and old alike. The last sacraments of the latter were administered to her by her pastor, Rev. Bredow.
A place is vacant in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chris Beck, which can never be filled. Besides Mrs. Mary Beck she is survived and mourned by her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Geopfert, Mrs. Lizzie Beck, Chris and August Hankemeier, all of Andrew, except Mrs. Lizzie Beck who resides in Davenport. Four brothers, Robert Adair of Colorado Springs, George Adair, Mitchell, S. D., John Adair, Lyonsville, Ia., Wm. Adair, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Woods, Leon, Ia., Mrs. Mary McCombs, Ft. Morgan, Colo., besides hosts of friends. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Bredow, at 1:30 Monday afternoon; interment was made in the Andrew cemetery beside her husband.
Attending from a distance were Henry and Clyde Woods, Mrs. Margaret Woods, Mrs. Maggie Fairman, and Ross Adair of Maquoketa, Mr. and Mrs. William Beck of Davenport and Mr. and Mrs. Felderman of Springbrookd, Ia.
