John J. Meinke 1814-1898

John J. Meinke was born in Schwerin, Mechlinberg, Germany, May 1, 1814. He was married to Sophia Brookmiller in 1842. Their union was blessed by one son, Henry August Herman (August)who drowned, August 20, 1859, and two daughters, Sophia Schocker and Mary Brimmer.
He came to America in 1851 and located in what is now Chicago, Illinois. Eighteen months later he came to Jackson county, where he resided until about 10 years ago9, when he located with his son in Clinton County, where he died.
His wife died June 5, 1860, and he again married in 1862 to Mrs. Mary Becker Martens, which happy union blessed with one son, William, with whose family, the father and mother lived.
The aged widow and three children, Mrs. Sophia Schocker, and Mrs. Mary Brimmer and William F. survive.
Funeral services Tuesday 10:30 a.m. at the home and 11:00 a.m. at the Union church with Rev. J. Moehl, pastor of the Lutheran church officiating. Burial will be in the Union cemetery.
The Rev. J. Moehl gave the service in German and Rev. D. F. Boomershine, pastor of the Reformed church, gave the service in English.
Interment made in the cemetery by the church.
He died in his son's, William F. Meinke, home 3 1/2 miles southwest of Maquoketa on Saturday, Dec. 24, 1898 at 10:30 a.m.
He was a highly respected and prosperous German farmer.
