Chauncey J. Fenton

Many Maquoketa and Fulton friends of Chauncey J. Fenton, a former resident of both cities, who passed away Oct. 23, will read with interest the following tribute from an Oklahoma City paper:

A tribute to a self-made man – Chauncey John Fenton, from a tiny Iowa town, sparsely settled, a single store, and little red school house, this man thru his untiring efforts and with no help whatever succeeded in not only attaining a position of trust and importance in this community, but the respect and love of all whose lives touched his. The president of his company in a message of condolence, referred to him as Chauncey my friend, while his old colored janitor mourned him as his best friend.

Over a hundred men in his employ knew him not only as their employer, but as a true friend ready to render assistance if ever the need should arise. Going out of his way to perform acts of kindness made his life full and happy, while his steadfast loyal devotion to friends and loved ones was typical of his unselfish life.

He had held the important position of general agent railway express for many years. A member of the chamber of commerce, Rotary club and a 32nd degree mason he took an active interest in any and all movements for the betterment of the community. His death came as a shock, having suffered a sudden heart attack when apparently in the best of health.

He is survived by his wife, Bess Cravens Fenton, a daughter, Deborah Ann. His mother, Elizabeth Ripple Fenton, and sister, Mrs. Bertha Fenton Huff and family.
