PROMINENT JACKSON COUNTY RESIDENT CALLED BY DEATHAt the advanced age of past eighty-nine years, John S. Thompson, for many years one of the most prominent residents of Farmers Creek township, passed away about six o'clock Monday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mattie Kitts, in the First ward, death being due to old age infirmities. Born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, March 22, 1830, he accompanied his parents in 1854 to Iowa, his father passing away enroute to their western home. It was the intention of the father to purchase a 400-acre farm upon arrival in Jackson county, but the intention was left for the son to carry out, which he did and located in Farmers Creek township where he spent the greater part of his life, becoming one of the foremost in advancing the interests of his community. On June 30, 1859, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha A. Sutton, and to this union four children were born: Isaac, Mrs. Mattie Jewell, Mrs. Lillian Rockwell and James. The wife and mother passed away in January, 1908. Mr. Thompson was never an aspirant for high political honors but took a keen interest in public affairs pertaining to his own community. He held numerous township offices and in 1864 was elected supervisor from his township and of the eighteen members who comprised the board at that time, he was the last remaining.
By his honesty and integrity he had made hosts of friends and it may truthfully be said that the community is the better that Mr. Thompson has lived. The funeral was held from the home of this daughter, Mrs. Mattie Kitts, Thursday, interment being made in the Fulton cemetery.
