Jackson Sentinel, Thursday, October 15, 1908

Sarah E. Ripple was born in Fayette county, Pa., March 6th, 1848, and died at Maquoketa, Oct. 9th, 1908. She was the youngest child of a family of six children of William and Jane Thompson. Her parents and family started for Iowa in the year 1854, by boat down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi and when they reached Keokuk, Iowa, the father died from cholera, but the family later journeyed on to Jackson county and settled on a farm in Farmers Creek township a short distance north of Fulton where they continued to reside.

She was married to Chauncy Ripple, Sept. 10th, 1863. She and her husband commenced house keeping on a farm in the neighborhood where her people lived, where they continued to reside until about five years ago when they moved to and made their residence in Maquoketa. Her husband departed this life Dec. 10th, 1906. She left four surviving children, Elizabeth H. Fenton, Alice M. Scherer of Maquoketa, Mattie Cain and Leroy Ripple of Oklahoma City, Okla., her eldest son, William Ripple having departed this life some three years ago and one brother, John S. Thompson of Farmers Creek and several grand chldren. She united with the Presbyterian church soon after her marriage and continued through life a devoted christian. She was also a member of Fulton Lodge No. 100 Rebekah. In all of the relations of life she was kind, generous and devoted to the helping of others and made her life felt for good in whatever association she found herself. Gentleness, patience and charity marked her way in life and the presence was a sweet benediction in the community where she lived or the association where she appeared. Since the death of her husband she spent her time among her children. She went to Oklahoma City last January to visit her daughter, Mattie Cain and returned to Maquoketa the first of July. Soon after her return symptoms of cancerous tumors developed which baffled all skill, though hope was entertained that she might completely recover but waited upon by tender hands, surrounded by those she most loved on earth, she slowly declined until, Friday night when she answered the summons to join the loved ones who have gone before. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the home of J.W. Fenton, conducted by Rev. S. F. Milliken and the remains laid to rest in Mount Hope cemetery.
