Mrs. Emeline Bradway passed away Monday evening, Jan. 9th, at six o’clock after a brief illness of la grippe. Emeline McConnell was born in New Brighton, Beaver county, Penn., February 27, 1815. She was married in 1838 to M. D. Bradway. They made Philadelphia and New Jersey their home until the fall of 1858, when they came to Iowa and settled on the old Hoffman place near Esgate, which place is still in the family. The retention of her mental powers was most wonderful. She was always a strong, independent thinker and early gave cause for anxiety among the more orthodox of her friends, by leaving the ranks of the conservative “Friends” and joining while in Philadelphia, the branch of more liberal “Friends” established by Lucretta Mott. While still young, she, a school mate and husband, answered a call for volunteers to teach the free negroes in Cincinnati, which at that time required courage, as such reformers took their lives in their hands in attempting to teach that much disliked race. She has ever been interested in all reform movements and advanced ideas. She is survived by a son George Bradway and daughter, Mrs. Emily Bradway Robinson. She was a highly educated and respected lady and the family have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
