February 10, 1920Death of Mrs. Norma Johnson Hurd at Marshalltown
The many friends of Mrs. Norma Johnson-Hurd, a former Maquoketa girl who had spent nearly her entire life here, were shocked Saturday morning when a telegram received advised them that she had passed away about 9 o’clock Friday evening. A mother had made the supreme sacrifice and as the little bud had some to bring joy to the home, the same angels which brought it, chaperoned its dearest earthly friend to that heavenly land. No nobler mission is assigned by God than that of motherhood and no sacrifice more sublime than in the fulfillment of His law.
Norma Johnson-Hurd was the only daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Geo. O. Johnson, Sr., and was born in this city April, 1884 and here she spent the great portion of her life. She graduated from the Maquoketa High School with the class of 1905, after which she attended Oberlin College until ill health compelled her to discontinue her studies. She was a member of the Congregational church, the P. E. O., and Order of Eastern Star and Woman’s Club, and always took an active part in the social and progressive work of the various organizations that deemed her membership an honor. But a few years ago she was united in marriage to Roy E. Hurd who was then an instructor in our public schools, and after completing his services here he removed to Marshalltown which has since been their home. A little daughter came to bless their home Friday evening and with the dawn of the little life came the sunset of the mother’s day, mingling a dense cloud of doom with the ray of sunshine which had entered the home.
Mrs. Hurd leaves besides her husband and little one, two brothers, Maj. E. C. of Washington, D. C. and Dr. George Johnson of Marshalltown, Ia., also two aunts, Mrs. Anna Crawford of Chicago and Mrs. Emma Moneye of Syracuse, N. Y. The funeral was held yesterday at Marshalltown, the remains being temporarily placed in the receiving vault in the mausoleum there, awaiting further arrangements for final committal.
