July 31, 1873Fatal Accident
On Monday last two men were running horses at Baldwin, in this county. Their course was under the Midland Railway bridge, and when passing through, the horse ridden by Nicholas Wivinis shied, and running against one of the bents, crushed Wiyinis in a horrible manner. His head was terribly cut, his ribs, arm and leg broken. The poor man lived but a short time, during which he spoke but once, asking who broke his leg.
Nicholas Wivinis was a soldier in Co. L, 2d Iowa cavalry, and during four years sustained the reputation of being one of the best men in that noble regiment. Whatever his other failings, he was a good soldier, brave and true, a generous comrade and a jolly companion. The old members of the 2d Cavalry will be sorry to hear of his death, a wife and family are bereaved and mourning for the one untimely killed.
