Lorinda Pate, daughter of Jesse and Lucretia Pate was born in Maquoketa township, January 10, 1830, on what is known as the John Burke farm, and died of heart failure May 18, 1907 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Shattuck, aged 68 years, four months and 8 days. She was among the first born in the township where she grew to womanhood. July 4, 1858 she was married to Charles Hammilton Patterson who died June 28, 1898. To this union were born eight children, one, George, dying in infancy. Elmer B. died March 13, 1902. Six remain to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother. They are Charles H., Jesse A., Willie E., Arch W., Nellie, wife of Bert Shattuck, all of Maquoketa and Viola, Mrs. Harry Rogers of Fairfield, Iowa. There also remains 7 grandchildren, 1 brother, G. W. Pate of Scotia, Cal., 4 sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Tyler and Mrs. Minerva Hawley of Humboldt County, Cal., Mrs. W. D. Palmer of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Mrs. Emily Ellis of Davenport. She was an affectionate wife and devoted mother, a kind neighbor highly respected by all who knew her and will be sorely missed in the community in which she was born and always lived. Funeral services were held in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Shattuck, three miles north of Maquoketa on Monday, May 20, at 2 p.m. The floral offering was beautiful. Miss Helen Dobbins of Maquoketa sang two fine solos for the occasion and a long cortege of friends followed the remains to their last resting place in Bridgeport cemetery. Rev. D. F. Boomershine officiating.
