The great eastern portals of heaven silently open, are drawn, and the soul of a dear wife and mother stole forth in the hush of the dawn. Laurette Mary O’Niel Roeder, daughter of the late Wm. and Mrs. Mary Taylor O’Niel, was born in Jackson Township, July 7, 1880, and died at her late home in Spragueville at 5:30 Friday morning, Dec. 3, 1920, leaving in the grief showed home a devoted husband, three sons and three daughters, Gerald, Elinor, Marvin, Millicent, Vincent and Adelaide, an aged mother, Mrs. Mary O’Niel of Andrew, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Andrew of Rock Island, to mourn her departure. Her only brother, E. E. O’Niel, preceded her in death seven months ago, and her father passed away several years ago. Etta, as she was called, completed her education in the Andrew and Maquoketa high schools and for four years was a very successful teacher in the rural schools in Jackson county. In the year of 1898 she united with the Catholic church at Maquoketa, Ia., at which time the late Father Bowan was pastor there. October 27, 1903, she became the bride of Philip Roeder, the ceremony been performed at Sacred Heart church Maquoketa, by her pastor, Rev. Bowan. Mr. and Mrs. Roeder continuously resided in Jackson Township until Feb. 16, 1920, when they moved to a beautiful farm home in Spragueville, Ia.
