Maquoketa Weekly Excelsior,
February 27, 1873.

HERSHBERGER – At Baldwin, February 20, 1873, suddenly, of heart disease, Jacob K. Hershberger, aged 59 years.

Mr. Hershberger has been a prominent man in this section for thirty years. He came to Iowa at an early day, and settled near where his remains are now buried in Monmouth Township. He was a man full of energy, and being guided by honest purposes has accomplished a large work. He has occupied many positions of trust and honor, and always acquitted himself with credit. He was elected to the General Assembly on term, and was an efficient member of that body. He was always an active temperance man, and for many years was one of the officers of the Grand Division of Iowa Sons of Temperance. As a friend and neighbor Mr. Hershberger had few equals. His warm, generous nature aided by ample means, made him one of the most hospitable of men; and hundred who read this notice will recall to mind the times they have been welcomed by “Uncle Jake,” as he was called by the whole community. He was a good man, and his loss will be felt by a great many people. His wife, the partner of his early manhood, and three sons, are left to mourn the loss of one whose place can never be filled.
