Maquoketa Weekly Excelsior
March 6, 1873

Died MORIARTY – On Friday the 21st inst., after a lingering and painful illness, Mrs. Jennie Moriarty, consort of the editor of this paper, aged 44 years.

The dear departed one has proved a valuable comforter to us for exceeding a quarter of a century. A sympathizing wife, and Christian mother has left us the sweet memory of numberless tokens of affection, and self-sacrificing devotion, seldom experienced in this short life. Her kindness and Christian example won many ardently attached friends, who will, we feel assured, sympathize with us and our bereaved children, in this sad affliction. – Morris Co., (Kansas) Republican.

Mr. Moriarty, who penned the above, was an old settler in Jackson county, and the founder of the EXCELSIOR. For many years he resided in this city, and his wife is well remembered by our people. She was universally respected by all who knew her. She well deserves the loving tribute paid by her bereaved husband. Several children, among them Mrs. R. G. Gardner of this city, mourn the loss of a kind mother – that dearest of all earthly friends.
