VAN HOOK – Mary Garlow, was born at Dayton Ohio, Jan 20, 1832, and after a short illness of 4 days, died of heart failure at her home in Maquoketa township, Jackson county, Iowa. Feb. 17, 1905, being 73 years, 27 days old.

Deceased was a kind loving wife and mother, she made her home a cheerful place for her husband and family. Many years ago she united with the Christian church and remained faithful to the end.

She was married to Josiah Van Hook in Sept. 1862. He died in May, 1892. She was a mother of eight children, five of whom live to mourn the loss of motherly death, vix: Mrs. Pangburn of Maquoketa, Ia,; Henry of Scott county, Ia.; Ora, of Anamosa, S. D.; Lawrence of Utica, N. Y., and John, who stayed at home taking care of mother. She also leaves to mourn her death, one brother, Jacob Garlow, of Scott county, Ia,; 14 grand-children, and 2 great-grand children.

Mrs. Van Hook came to Jackson county with her parents, who settled on a farm near Bridgeport, in 1842. She has been ever since a resident of this county. She was one of the pioneers and oldest settlers of the county. Her character was that of a good neighbor and had many friends by whom she will be much missed, always willing to lend a helping hand when ever held was needed. All that human hands could do for her was done during her last illness; but in vain. Her time had come to leave this world. Being called to go, she was willing, for it was God’s will, and “His will be done.”

A precious one from us has gone.

A voice we loved is stilled

A place is vacant in our home.

Which never can be filled.

God in his wisdom hath recalled

The bond His love had given,

And though the body slumbers here

The spirit is in Heaven.

The funeral services were held at the house Sunday, Feb. 19, 1905. At twelve o’clock, with interment at Bridgeport cemetery. Rev. J. Bretnall of Andrew, conducted the services.
